Project-Beta wouldn't be anywhere without all of the concepts tested and created by Valve. When we began our mod we had a set goal, to recreate as much of the Alpha and Beta concepts for Portal shown by Valve during 2006 and 2007. One of the first main difficulties was changing the way Portal renders a Portal, this made it extremely difficult to remake the Spirals shown by Valve in late 06 and early 2007.As a reference here are 2 images of the Spirals, one is Valve and the other is what we have recreated for Project-Beta.
The Valve Spiral Portal.
Our Spiral Portal.
One of the many other concepts we really liked, was the hand on the front of the Portal gun. In about Mid 2007 Valve showed a few videos of Portal that showed a model that would never make the retail version, they showed us the hand on the front. The hand made the gun to high poly for most systems and was later removed for our current floating gun model. Here is a video showing Valves Portal gun with the hand on the front. For the best image, pause the video at 1:04.
As many people noticed, the hand on the front adds a bit more realism to the game, rather than just a floating gun. Because of this reason, we decided to add the hand and even the holes back onto the front of the Portal Gun.
For today's final Concept that Valve left out of the game, the male player. Valve showed the Male player model in the 2006 trailer, and continued to showcase the character until mid 2007 when Chell was revealed. The male player model served no purpose besides a place holder, however in Project-Beta the male model will be our main character and one of our hardest models to finish. Here is one of the more recognized image of the Male model.
Seeing as we had very few reference pictures of the male model, we decided to create our own instead to give our mod a bit more originality. Our player model has come along fairly nicely and has a few more edits to be done. Here is an image of our Male player model WIP.
More to come later as the mod progresses.

February 2009 Status

It's finally February and a lot of work has been completed for Project-Beta. Within the last month we have purchased a domain, and we have forums setup. The website URL is www.project-beta.com , so take a look when you have the time. Now onto the more pressing issues of the Mod release date and why it was delayed, plus I know many of you are wondering where the demo is. Due to many technical issues and way more work to be done than we thought, the mod is delayed until later this year, the demo however has been moved to the original mod release day of April 1st. The demo will contain a few easter eggs due to our delay on the mod. Our current status on the project is about 65-70% done with the models and textures. A new viewmodel is in the works with a fixed clipping issu and holes in the barrel. The male player is our next focus and after that we have a few other plans. The spiral portals are pretty much done after about 4 months of work on them, the sprites are done as well, the particles are near finished. Our mapper reepblue is currently working on the campaign mode and some bonus maps, this mod will feature maps from such creators as Hen Mazolski, Onequarterlife, and Caboosejr. Basically keep your eyes and ears open, because there is a lot more coming your way from the Project Beta team.
